Born in Nancy, 1956, graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts (art school), CharlElie has long been a noted figure of the "multist"movement of multidisciplinary artists.
As a matter of fact, for over twenty-five years, CharlElie has been pursuing a creative process towards defined as "Total Art", a general attitude consisting in finding interconnections between the various forms of human expression - written word, graphic art and music.
Significantly, in 1978, the topic of his end-of-studies thesis was "the polymorphism of spirit", something he has kept investigating to this day. On that occasion, he presented photographs, texts and paintings, and also self-produced a debut album, "12 Chansons dans la sciure" ("12 Songs In Sawdust"), which attracted interest from music professionals. Only three years later, in 1981, he was the first French artist signed to Chris Blackwell's legendary Anglo-American label Island Records; that same year he founded, in Nancy, the "Local à louer" ("For Lease") collective which brought together photographers, painters and poets - to celebrate this, he published his famous "Art-Rock manifesto".
The growing success of his albums didn't detract from his continuing work on paintings, sculptures and photographs, which have all been exhibited on numerous occasions (themes of said exhibitions have included : the memory of hotel rooms, images from travels, urban impressionism, and inner landscapes). CharlElie has also designed posters for various events, most notably tennis events (CharlElie is a great lover of sports, and was a member of the supporting committee for the 2008 Paris Olympics), logos (e.g. that of the French region of Lorraine), watches and, more recently shoes (under the "ChElie" brand). In parallel he has published books and composed over fifteen movie soundtracks, including the acclaimed "Tchao Pantin".
CharlElie is a reference, an uncompromising talent concerned solely with the long term. With 23 albums of songs, several published essays, numerous exhibitions of his paintings, photographs and drawings (in France, Belgium, Switzerland), and countless concert tours both in France and abroad (Asia, Australia, Canada, Germany, Africa and Eastern Europe) under his belt, CharlElie has over the years patiently built, brick by brick, with modesty and dignity, a giant edifice devoted to creation. Each new journey is an incentive for new questionings, new images, and hearing new sounds provides stimuli for new literary creations. CharlElie Couture sees no boundaries between people or genres - anything can be a source of inspiration, and stimulate creativity within any art form.
From the very early days of the Internet, CharlElie saw the potential for expression and communication contained in that media, and was among the first thousand acknowledged "Web pioneers", having launched his groundbreaking website, "Les Champs Paraboliques", as early as 1996. The site keeps evolving, drawing from the ever-expanding possibilities of digital creation.
Working on the neo-constructivist project called "The big RE-Construction", CharlElie settled in New York City with his family, saying that this environment is more conducive to the full blossoming of his Art search.
As with the careers of many great artists, full of light and shade and mysteries, CharlElie's quest is in many ways the counterpart to the "inner landscapes" he pictures in the quest of the absolute he has described thus : "Painting is an open window on the invisible".

Graduated from the ENSAD (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs) in 1991 in Paris.
Genevieve Gauckler is a French artist, illustrator and art director who is best known for her ever-evolving
procession of lovable characters and technicolour digital mashes. Her works are bright, fun and hectic – often
combining symmetrical designs with soft-edged computer generated images laid against photographed
backgrounds. She’s into everything and constantly amazed, handling and creating images and shapes with
dexterity and innocence.
When asked about her formative influences, she sites an early childhood fascination with the colourful
packaging on her favourite breakfast cereals and the title sequence of her favorite TV series, “Flipper”. She
spends any she time has available traveling around the world, giving lectures, exhibiting work and obsessively
taking photos for her ever expanding collages. Her favorite places are Japan and India but she also loves
spending time in the French countryside accompanied by her faithful dog, Kawa, and of course her laptop.
Geneviève Gauckler can look back on broad experience in the field of graphic design, illustration and
art direction. Starting with french record label F Communications (Laurent Garnier, St Germain) she later
worked with directors Kuntzel & Deygas on promos for Dimitri from Paris, Pierre Henry and Sparks, as well
as commercials (e.g. Yves Saint Laurent’s Live Jazz), tittles for French/German cultural TV-channel Arte and
some short movies. She has also art-directed the franco-nippon fanzine « Minimix ». In 1999, she was hired by
the Internet company boo.com to create their online fashion magazine. While in London, she worked for the
design agency Me Company, developing a number of projects for the web.
Since 2001, Geneviève has been focusing on videos (Brigitte Fontaine, some experimental videos with the
collective Pleix), art (Mandala Project), illustrations for various magazines (Flaunt, Beaux-Arts Magazine, Le
Figaro Japan, IDN, Form, Vogue UK), advertising (Renault, Bourjois, Coca-Cola, Skype, PlayStation, Lane
Crawford, Orange, o2 Germany, Adobe) and books, objects, toys & Tshirts (Domestic, Medicom Toys, 2K,
BeamsT, Publik) corporate identity (Hip), character design, exhibitions, comic book (L’Arbre Génialogique),
animated tittle sequences (German-French Arte Channel). Three books have been published about her work,
in Japan by Gas Book and in France by Pyramyd.
Apart from working on a regular basis on some advertising jobs (Adobe, Orange, o2 Germany), her next
projects is to create a experimental video with Pleix and starting working on her next comic book. ^ close the bio ^ |

Technology, Culture, and Communication have always been my passions. Over years, my professional and personal experience turned out to be an exploration and research of how they affect one another, and have taken me to a journey to live and work in four different countries (Brazil where I was born, Japan, Germany – from which I also hold a citizenship -, and the United Kingdom) over the last ten years. Moreover, it has taken me to edit over 25 books in the last seven years, in areas such as advertising, Internet, computer graphics, art, product design, computer games, and others, collaborating with people from over 50 countries. My aim has been to understand how different cultures navigate in this new environment of multi-platform communication, with endless possibilities.
After studying graphic design and marketing, I have left my native Brazil for Japan, where I spent almost four years in Tokyo as an editor and art director for digital and design magazines. I subsequently (2001) joined TASCHEN in Cologne, Germany where, as editor-in-charge, I have been creating a number of titles in a wide range of subjects, from design to pop culture, including Digital Beauties and the popular Web Design and Advertising Now! series. I have also lectured on digital culture, publishing, design, advertising, communication, and technology. In the last couple years I been a speaker at some events around the world, including at TED 2007 (Monterrey), Art Directors Club (Madrid), Benetton Fabrica (Italy), Institute of Contemporary Arts (London), EFX (Germany), UOL (São Paulo, Brazil), BNDES (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), CMYK Conference (Barcelona), e-DIT (Germany), Plus Design Conference (Birmingham, UK), and Belgrade Design Week (Serbia). To date my books have sold over 1 million copies worldwide. ^ close the bio ^ |
